Happy Children's Day!

Dear class,

It's been close to a year now and you are setting out for the test of your life. On this special day that truly belongs to you, I just wish to say that you have been great. We had good times, bad times but what makes our memories worth keeping are these special moments. Thank you...for walking through this year with me. For all the joy (and tears) that you have brought, I do treasure every one of you.

Here's a poem I'll like to share with you. It says of the wish I have for every one of you.

'Must' & 'Have to'

Found this on a post in a forum.

"Have to" and "must" have the same meaning in the affirmative and interrogative forms when referring to obligation. Some grammarians think that "must" is slightly stronger, but for all practical purposes, they mean the same thing:
Doctors have to attend medical school for several years before they can practice medicine.
Doctors must attend medical school for several years before they can practice medicine.

While "have to" and "must" can be used interchangeably, there are differences in usage, as Michael Swan observes in Practical English Usage (Oxford University Press, 1995).

Both verbs can be used in British English to talk about obligation. (In American English, 'have to' is the normal form.)
British English often makes a distinction as follows:
'Must' is used mostly to talk about the feelings and wishes of the speaker and hearer — for example, to give or ask for orders.
'Have (got) to' is used mostly to talk about obligations that come from "outside" — for example from laws, regulations, agreements and other people's orders.

Compare: I must stop smoking. (I want to.)
I have to stop smoking. Doctor's orders.

This is a terrible party. We really must go home.
This is a lovely party, but we've got to go home because of the baby-sitter.

Must you wear dirty old jeans all the time? (Is it personally important for you?)
Do you have to wear a tie at work? (Is there a regulation?).

I was not easily fooled. When he was not noticing, I opened the wallet and caught a glimpse of an identity card. To my horror, it was not the man’s face. It was my favourite singer, Taufik. I turned and ran as fast as I could. When the man saw me escaping, he began chasing after me. He was hot on my heels. I found a police car patrolling down the street and waved frantically at it. Soon, the man was caught and Taufik came to the police station to retrieve his wallet. As a form of appreciation, he gave me free tickets to his concert!

The man claimed that the wallet was his but the identity card’s picture in the wallet did not match his face. I refuse to hand over the wallet and started to walk away but he threatened me with his pen-knife. The owner of the wallet came back searching for it and saw our conflict. He came forward and tried to rescue me but was injured by the man’s pen-knife. In the end, the man was handed over to the police and the owner was glad that he was able to retrieve the money.

“Thank you very much! I would not know how to answer my friend if the money is gone!” the owner said and heaved a sigh of relief. He had been instructed by his friend to deposit the money into the ban but had carelessly dropped it while rushing there. As I was already late for school, I parted ways with him and headed to school. To my amazement, I saw a familiar face walking towards the classroom. My new Mathematics teacher was the owner of the wallet!

Dear class,

I was reading this article on organ donation and thought I should bring this to your attention.

Did you know that if you are a non-Muslim, you are automatically required to donate your organs when you die, if you choose not to opt out of an organ donation programme?

There was a recent hot discussion in the papers about this. It all started with this man who did not opt out of a organ donation programme (HOTA) and the doctors had to take out his organs for transplant when he was declared brain dead, despite his family members' violent objections.

Yet, there are advantages to the organ donation programme.
There are also people who felt very strong about programme.

What are your views on this? Do you feel right to do so and why do you feel this way?

Do remember to pack these items (things I feel you should have with you):

Don't forget to prepare your heart and your mind to challenge yourself physically and mentally.

National Education Show Report

On 15 July 2006,
half of all primary five pupils in Singapore, went for the National Education Show at the Singapore National Stadium. It was a hot and sunny afternoon. All primary five pupils in our school were supposed to assemble inthe hall by 1:30pm. When all of us had settled down, an unexpected rain poured. We were feeling a little disappointed as we thought we were going to sit on wet benches. All of us looked like a small island of red colours. That was because all of us wore the red tee-shirt we bought weeks before that day. Then, after we got our goodie bags and the packets of food, we sat on the buses that the school had provided. When we reached, we waited vert long for our turn to get in to the stadium. When we have got our seat, we ate our food and waited for the show to start. When it started, the whole stadium cheered wildly. It was long until the military band performed their song. It was cool! Then, 'The Roar of The Red Lions' amazed all of us. Twenty-two jumpers from the Red Lions performed their different disciplines of skydiving from altitudes of 10,000 feet above the ground! Wow! I think this performance is tough as it requires then to control their movements by facing the wind. Then, the forging-in of Total Defence Contingents started. When the marching-in of the Colour Party and Guard-of-Honour, some of us screamed. When the arrival of VIPs, we cheered!
The song items were played. They were familiar community songs but included a new one this year. My favourite song is the new song 'My Island Home' by Kaira Gong. After all the song items, it was time for the arrival of the Reviewing Officer. The there was a 'F-16' fly-past and there was a "loud explosion". It was loud and a bit scary. Then, there was a ceremonial Gun Salute. After the gun salute, there was a drive-past. It was the nice and confortable time for the pledge taking and national anthem. After the pledge taking and national anthem, we saw a few more performance and lovely and colourful fire works. When the show came to an end, it was time the Reviewing Officer to leave. It was about 8:20pm and we waited almost three and a half hours at the stadium after the show. It was really boring to wait. There was nothing to do. Finally, we reached school at about 12:10pm. Although we were tired, we had lots of fun. But after the whole show, I feel proud to be a Singaporean!

Welcome back to another term of school! I hope you are ready to work hard and play hard!
If you think hieroglyphics is fun, you have just touched the surface of one ancient culture.
For this group task, you will have to research on one particular ancient civilisation.

Look at the daily life of a person in the ancient times and focus on any 4 aspects:
1) Clothing -What did they wear?
2) Food - What did they eat?
3) Architecture - Where and what type of houses did they live in?
4) Activities (Way of Life) - What did they do?

Dear class,

I have been checking your work and found that you have not been doing the corrections for MPAH Workbooks seriously. Many pages with corrections are not done, even though I have show the answers on the screen in class.

Be prepared to stay back either after school or during recess to finish them up for me. This laid-back and lazy attitude upsets me. I have already called up the parents of 3 students for them to stay back on Tue.

1) Class to do listening comprehension Lesson 1. CD and teacher's book are in a red folder at the side of my table labelled in the English compartment.

2) Check answers with green pen.

3) If time permits, continue with Lesson 2.

Class>> 1) Please pass the MUFTI day money to Carissa or Hui Min today if you have not done so.
2) Bring a hard backing and pencil (stationery) for comic-drawing lessons tomorrow.

3) No lessons tomorrow but bring your trusty handbook, pencil case and a book for silent reading.

Anyway, I came across this interesting website through a friend. I have not tried it myself but maybe you'll find this interesting. It is similar to a personality test.

Dear class,

It seems that when I was reading your comments and tagboard messages, some of you are still trying to use this blog as a place to meet or discuss about games. It is alright for me if along the way, our discussion touch on topics like our hobbies or interests and hence we bring up the subject of gaming.

However, it was never my intention to start a blog solely for games. If you find this blog not fulfilling your intended purpose, you may choose to stop visiting this site.

This blog is first started because I wanted to create a class identity, something special and unique only to us 5E-ians. Later, I realised that it can be an ideal place to share what we think to think or feel about school, lessons, generally your school or life experiences. Interesting weblinks will be shared whenever possible and photos of our lives in PCS will be featured.

It is only the starting point for this blog. I see much potential in it and in many of you should I start to form a blogging committee within you to change layout, write posts, create links to your web pages. It is a learning experience for me too as this is the first time I have created a blog for my own class. I am feeling a little discouraged that some of you are mistaken about the true intentions of this blog and that you are feeling 'bored' already.

Anyway, I am still giving it a shot and will continue unless the majority of you feel this blog is no longer helpful or value-adding.
